We help New Orleans home owners every week with their homeowners insurance but before we do we ask 5 questions.
Before we move anyone from their current insurance company we make sure they understand and know the insurance company will perform an inspection and there are some issues the inspector will be looking for so before you cancel your current policy you should be aware of the five issues that could cause your new policy to be canceled.
You don’t have Circuit Breakers
Having a fuse box will result in a cancellation unless you convert to circuit breakers. Cost could be begin at $1,000
You have a Vicious or Prohibited Breed of Dog
Dog Bites are one of the most expensive claims home insurance companies have to pay out.
In 2012, State Farm Insurance paid more than $109 million on dog bite claims.
Homeowners companies in our area either exclude dog bite liability or limit the liability limit to as low as $25,000.
And if you have a dog on the prohibited breed list, you are not going to get any coverage for a dog bite claim.

What is a Prohibited Breed of Dog?
- American Bulldogs
- Caucasian Mountain Dogs
- Chow Chows
- Doberman Pinschers
- German Shepherd
- Great Danes
- Pit Bulls
- Staffordshire Terriers
- Wolf Hybrid
Each company may have others listed. Check with the company.
What about a mixed breed?
If the dog has any mix of a prohibited breed, the answer will probably be “no coverage” because if your dog has any mix of a dog on the prohibited breed list, it will not provide any coverage for a dog bite claim.
No Central Air conditioning and Heating
Most homeowners insurance companies will not insure your home if you don’t have a thermostat for your heat.
Plug in space heaters are a high risk for a fire loss.
Some homeowners insurance in New Orleans will allow you to have window units but your options will be limited.
Diving Board, Slide or Trampoline
Swimming pools are acceptable as long as the company is aware you have a swimming pool and upon inspection you don’t have a Slide or a Diving Board.
Some homeowners insurance companies will allow you to have a pool slide, diving board or trampoline but the company will not provide you any liability in the event of a claim.
If you have a swimming pool, it must be fenced and have a locking gate.
Trampolines result in high probability of injury.

Lifting or curling shingles on your roof
Your roof should be updated at least within the past 15 years.
If not, you risk the company determining your roof unacceptable or they will endorse the policy and remove replacement cost on your roof.
Some other items the company will ask you to fix, repair, update or change which may not result in a direct cancellation but you would be allowed to handle the items usually in a 30-45 day time frame.
- Existing Damage
- Rotten Boards/pillars/posts
- Lack of handrails on steps/porch
- Outside Appliances
- Debris in back yard
If you are not sure your house will pass an inspection, ask your agent, company or contact us and we can guide you.
Worst case is you leave a homeowners insurance company you have been with for 10 years for a large savings only to be canceled in 30 days because you had some of the items above and the representative failed to ask the right questions.
Not all Homeowners are a good fit for the new companies writing homeowners insurance in Louisiana.
Make sure you fit into the underwriting guidelines before you make a move.
HERE ARE 4 REASONS YOU SHOULD CONSIDER MOVING TO A NEW HOMEOWNERS INSURANCE COMPANY
YOU STILL HAVE A 3% or 5% HURRICANE or NAMED STORM DEDUCTIBLE
Hurricane deductibles are now being offered as low as 1000 depending on the location of your house
YOU HAD A BAD CLAIMS EXPERIENCE RECENTLY
Getting your claims paid when something unexpected happens is just as important as getting a lower competitive insurance premium
YOU HAVE NO RELATIONSHIP WITH YOUR AGENT, AGENCY OR INSURANCE COMPANY
Having the ability to speak to someone that knows you after the policy is sold is important. Insurance policies often need to be updated as your life changes. Its just not a buy it and forget it product. As your life changes, it is important you keep your insurance agent informed so they can make sure you are still properly protected.
YOU RECEIVED A RATE INCREASE AT RENEWAL THAT IS MORE THAN 15%-20%
A normal increase on your homeowners insurance renewal should be 1%-5% and that is usually due to the inflation guard endorsement (coverage automatically increases each renewal). If your renewal exceeds 15% it is possible your insurance company just took a rate increase so it is something you want to monitor as some of the new homeowners insurance companies writing in the New Orleans area may have offered low introductory rates or since they started writing new business they never asked for a rate increase and their initial rates were inadequate to maintain profitability.
What’s this all about?
Considering moving your homeowners insurance you need to make an informed decision.
Sometimes staying with your current insurance company is the best option for you.
It costs you nothing to find out what is available in the current home insurance market.
