wrecked car

When I review customers current auto insurance policies, too often the most important and most misunderstood coverage is missing.

Uninsured Motorists Coverage.

Most people assume Uninsured Motorists only covers you against uninsured motorists when you are injured in a car accident.

Sometimes customers just want to reject Uninsured Motorists without fully understanding the true benefit of the coverage.

Below I want show you another way to look at UM coverage and how it can protect you and your family.

It is no doubt that in South Louisiana we pay some of the highest auto insurance rates in the country.

Yes plaintiff attorneys and insurance fraud do contribute to our high insurance rates, but there is nothing we can do about that.

One thing you can do is protect you, your family and your passengers from drivers either without insurance or not enough insurance by selecting Uninsured Motorists coverage.

What is Uninsured Motorists coverage?

When you select Uninsured Motorists coverage you are protecting yourself from two things

Uninsured Driver

Under-insured Driver (not enough liability to compensate you in an accident)

Protecting against an Uninsured Driver

Due to our high auto insurance rates, many drivers in Louisiana decide to drive around without any auto liability insurance.

The risk for you is if one of these uninsured drivers were to hit you in accident and cause injury to you and your family, you would not have any compensation from the at-fault driver.

The only way for you to be compensated is if you had Uninsured Motorists coverage.

What does Uninsured Motorists cover?

You can be compensated for

  • pain and suffering
  • lost wages
  • medical bills

If you believe you only want compensation for lost wages and medical bills you can purchase

Economic Only Uninsured Motorists

at a premium discount

If you are still undecided if you should purchase Uninsured Motorists

you can look at the coverage this way.

Use it as disability insurance.

Take a look at the limits offered and determine your annual salary.

Here are the coverage limit options

If your annual salary is $50,000,

obtain at least $50,000 of Uninsured Motorists coverage.

Let’s say you are driving home from a party and an uninsured driver runs a red light and hits your vehicle.

You are injured and are temporarily disabled from the accident and are unable to return to work for 4 months.

If you have 4 months of income in a savings account, no problem, but if you are someone that doesn’t get paid unless you work,  you are now in a financial hardship.

You are unable to collect from the uninsured driver and if you have no UM coverage, you are out of luck.

But if you have $50,000 of UM coverage, you can make a claim for

  • Lost wages
  • Medical bills
  • Pain and suffering
  • Mental anguish

Now I don’t recommend you obtain only 50,000 of UM coverage.

I actually recommend you obtain 250,000 of auto liability and 250,000 of UM which makes you eligible to purchase an Umbrella Policy.

Another way to look at Uninsured Motorists coverage is when you add the coverage to your policy,  you are actually adding that liability limit to every driver on the road.

You no longer have to worry if an uninsured or under-insured driver hits you.

If you decide to obtain 100,000 of UM coverage and an under-insured driver hits you and you discover the driver only carried the state minimum of 15,000

You would be able to collect 115,000 from insurance.

   15,000 from the driver’s policy

+ 100,000 of coverage (UM) from yours

= 115,000 of available coverage

What’s this all about?

#1 mistake customers make is rejecting Uninsured Motorists coverage because it was not explained properly.

When you purchase Uninsured Motorists coverage you can now drive around knowing you can add up to 250,000 of coverage to every car on the road.

The good news is if you rejected Uninsured Motorist because maybe you didn’t understand or your agent didn’t offer it to you,
